“When Christmas is over, I’ll start my New Year’s Resolution. I’ll be fit and healthy. I’ll let myself have Christmas off which means there’s no point starting my fitness regime now” …Does this sound familiar?

You are not alone. Every year more than 50% of people make New Year’s Resolutions to lose weight, quit smoking, work out, etc, and yet, virtually every study tells us that around 80% of New Year’s resolutions will get abandoned by February. Holding off on starting with good intentions rarely works. Our bodies love stability. Our hormone, digestive, respiratory, and muscle systems all work in perfect harmony to retain balance. If you consume high amounts of sugar over Christmas, and then completely deprive the body of sugar, reduce your calorie intake and increase your exercise all on January 1st, we send our body into Chaos.

We advise starting making healthy manageable changes now in order to lay a solid foundation for your goals – whether that is changing your eating habits, starting with a personal trainer, or just walking more. Here are some tips to help you get started:

Exercise Friends

Find a friend or partner with the same aim to get fitter as you. Commit to training/walking/swimming together at a fixed time each week. Having a commitment to someone else other than just yourself is a huge motivator.

Couch to 5km

Download Couch to 5KM or a similar health app. Anything that guides you on building your fitness level over time so you don’t go too hard too early get.

Reduce your Alcohol

Reduce your alcohol content – how about not drinking from Sunday – Thursday, or only one night on the weekend. You’ll be amazed at how much better you feel.

Turn off your Devices

Turn off your phone/ iPad/ laptop at 9 pm – being on screens late at night affects your quality of sleep. The less tired you are the more you will feel like exercising.
